The Wordy Repertoire Of Children

image

By age three, children have a repertoire of 300 words. By age four, 1000 words. By age five, 6000 words. That’s what we learned from Dr. Lydia H. Soifer, Ph.D. at today’s Wonderplay™ Early Childhood Conference, which we liveblogged throughout the day.

You can access all the information we shared, on our Storify page. And here’s another eyeopener, from Dr. JoAnn Deak, Ph.D: “By the time kids are five, 50% of their time is spent on video/visual input. The brain isn’t designed for that.”

Thanks to all our the learning professionals, leaders in education, child & family development, researchers and audience—at 92Y and online, who made today so successful. We’ll have the complete webcast available for viewing online, soon.

Explore Wonderplay™ Early Childhood programs at 92Y.

imageOur brains generate enough energy to turn on a light bulb. Don’t take after an incandescent light bulb and let all that energy that go to waste. Check out our afterschool programs at 92Y.

92Y Video: Shababa Saturday Mornings

image

In 2007, Shababa at 92nd Street Y started as a musical Shabbat gathering of a handful of families singing with Karina in a corner of the 92Y lobby. It rapidly became a vibrant, bursting community, where families with young children are a part of an intergenerational, inclusive Jewish experience, as seen in the video below, filmed at Shababa Saturday Mornings:

    Passport NYC Shablog: Week 3

    image

Every Friday we’ll be posting a recap of the previous week’s activities in our Passport NYC Camp.

Shabbat Shalom and welcome to the Passport NYC First Session Finale Shablog! We really can not believe how quickly these three weeks have flown by. It was just yesterday we were wearing name tags trying our hardest to put our best foot forward to meet new people and match names to faces. Look where we are now…tears building up as we pack bags, clean dorm rooms and prepare for our final Havdalah service together. We’ve celebrated three Shabbats within our Mishpacha and it’s hard to believe that this Passport NYC family will be saying goodbye tomorrow. This has honestly been an incredible experience. A dream that has come to life (Alan Saltzs’ dream to be exact). This community that we have developed is made up of 60 different personalities. 60 individuals who have learned to accept one another for who they are. They have learned to appreciate one another and most of all learned to learn from one another. To have had the opportunity to watch you all develop the skills that you have, over the past three weeks is remarkable. Your passion for your specialties, for life and for each others success is inspiring. We admire each and every one of you and could not be more proud of the accomplishments that you have showcased, not only in our Specialty Showcase but throughout your entire Passport NYC experience. We hope to have you join us once again in the summers to come! Please keep in touch, And hopefully throughout the winter months we will make appearances within your home towns to visit with you, your family and your friends! With much love and appreciation to our pioneer families, We wish you a fabulous rest of your summer! And, don’t you worry- there will be more Shablogs to come during the 2nd Session…

    Passport NYC Shablog: Week 2

    image

Every Friday we’ll be posting a recap of the previous week’s activities in our Passport NYC Camp.

Week 2 has flown by so incredibly fast we can hardly believe it. This week was jam packed with exciting specialty adventures, all camp programs and visitors joining us to see the excitement that is, Passport NYC! We celebrated the 4th of July in two great ways, first by celebrating our First Passport NYC birthday, Happy Sweet Sixteen Amanda and 2nd by helping to decorate and celebrate the 4th with the Senior Citizens of the Jewish Home on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. It felt so great to bring our Passport NYC community into their home and spread some 4th of July cheer! We got to round the day out by viewing the incredible fireworks display from Riverside Park. Oh did we forget to tell you? We have clean clothes! We had a chance to do our laundry on Monday night which for many was a new experience. Although it was hot, we cooled off with ice cream and games in the laundromat’s outdoor space. Tuesday night we traveled to the Top of the Rock to see what New York City has to offer from way up high. We got an opportunity to share our perspective with one another and appreciate how beautiful New York is from all angles. Wednesday we cheered on the New York Mets in their new Citifield Stadium. We got a warm welcome with Passport NYC in lights on the score board… Too bad the Mets lost to the Cincinnati Reds. Thursday night we hit up Broadway by enjoying West Side Story, a really great way to start the wind down of our week. Now we are back at Friday, wrapping up our 2nd full week of Passport NYC. There is so much more to do, to see and to share in together and we hope that within the next week the sun will remain shining, the cool air will filter in and we will take in our last week of First Session as a large Mishpacha (family) of Passport NYC. We are excited about the week ahead and can’t wait to share it all with you!

    Passport NYC Shablog: Week 1

    image

Every Friday we’ll be posting a recap of the previous week’s activities in our Passport NYC Camp.

We would like to welcome everyone aboard this incredible journey we have been on and we look forward to sharing all of our experiences with you along the way. The first week of our Passport NYC program has been amazing and of course exhausting. We have joined together to build our camp traditions, culture and of course our community. We shared in our first Shabbat Dinner together tonight and were able to develop rituals that will continue into Second Session and beyond… We look forward to the weeks to come and sharing all the excitement with you! Shabbat Shalom, Have a great week!

    Weissbluth Method Infant Nap App

    image

Dr. Marc Weissbluth, leading expert on infant sleep who comes to 92Y annually, has developed The Weissbluth Method Infant Nap App for the iPhone with his son.

My father recognized that busy mothers may be distracted and might not put their baby down soon enough for a nap. He knew that if babies are kept up too long, they get a “second wind” and then they have difficulty napping well. One night, he was describing to me his idea for a “timing device” that would serve as a nap reminder-I thought, “That is so 20th century!” . I explained to him that we were in the 21st century and that there was something called “iPhone Apps.” Together, we created the, “WEISSBLUTH METHOD INFANT NAP APP” which should help parents nap their babies during their first year. -Daniel Weissbluth, MD

Fatigued parents in the New York area will also be relieved to know that Dr. Weissbluth’s next visit to 92Y is around the corner on May 24 with a special session on May 25 for parents of twins. Plug in and get advice from the doctor in person.

The Tips And Tricks Of Raising Toddlers

A parent of a 20 month old and member of the NYC Dads Group attended a parenting discussion at the 92nd Street Y Parenting Center and blogged about his positive experience. He left the event with a lot of tips, many of which he shared on NYC Dads Group blog. Such as:

image“...hitting and spanking doesn’t work. it shows kids that it is okay to hit and hurt people. they will learn more from what you do than from you say (actions speak louder than words!)

reinforce positive behavior and try to ignore or discourage unsuitable behavior. “DISTRACT & REDIRECT” - offer substitutions and distractions in a positive way when possible

the limits you set should be clear, consistent, and as few as possible

make your environment as child-friendly as possible so you don’t have to say “no” all of the time

toddlers don’t like big and abrupt changes, so give some advance notice when you will be changing an activity. Try to motivate them to the next activity by talking to them as you begin: “we’re leaving the park in a few minutes’” and then, “let’s see what we can have for dinner.”

Read all the tips and tricks he learned here.

92Y Video: MindCapsules™ - One Life, One Lesson, One Minute with Susie Essman

For our next video in the MindCapsules™ series, Susie Essman offered some sage advice to the question, “What Advice Would You Give The Children in Your Life?”

In a nutshell, she said: pay attention. Almost verbatim, she offered the same advice we heard repeatedly from our own mother:

Pay attention. And I really believe that’s the key to life. If you pay attention, you’re not depressed. If you pay attention, you’re living your life, you’re not watching your life. And most important, pay attention to your own feelings.”

Watch the full video above, and check out past MindCapsules™ here.

  • Charting Your Hormone Options: Dec 1
