Just about every day now, big news comes out on the podcasting front. Yesterday Apple announced that iTunes now supports podcasts. Today, well—as promised—the 92nd Street Y is trying its hand at podcasting.
Former Beach Boy Brian Wilson was here at Makor a few weeks back as part of a panel discussion following a screening of the film Beautiful Dreamer: Brian Wilson and the Story of Smile. We've got a recording of that discussion for you.
Smile is the most famous "unfinished" album in rock history. Often dubbed "the holy grail of rock 'n' roll," this uncompleted 1967 Beach Boys album has been a legend for decades. People compared it to the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band without ever having heard it. Fans and music critics spent 37 years wondering if they would ever get a chance to listen to it. Then in 2004, it was released. No one was disappointed. Smile sounds as "out there" today as it would have in 1967. Fans are ecstatic, and newcomers are discovering it every day.
It really is an amazing album by any standard.
Hear Brian Wilson and the panelists on creativity, drugs, how digital technology helped make completion of Smile possible, and more in this 35-minute clip.
