Last month, we mentioned that the film Capote starring Philip Seymour Hoffman featured an important scene in what was supposed to be the 92nd Street Y’s Kaufmann Concert Hall. The Y, you see, was where Truman Capote gave his first public reading of In Cold Blood, on December 6, 1964. We also encouraged interested parties to contact our own Buttenwieser Library to listen to a recording of the reading.
Well, it turns out there actually is no recording of that historic reading, in contrast to most of the other events that have happened here. Your excitable blog editor jumped the gun. But there is a very good reason why we’re without a recording: Mr. Capote wouldn’t let us. In fact, Capote’s reading of In Cold Blood was a complete surprise to almost everyone involved. The evening had been advertised as a reading of Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
We do, however, have recordings of Capote’s 1952, 1954 and 1963 readings here at the Y. Call 212.415.5544 if you’re interested in hearing them.
