Film Studies: Sweding with Mos Def and Jack Black

Video: Trailer for Be Kind Rewind

Be Kind Rewind is the latest film by Michel Gondry, director of Oscar-winner Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, starring Jack Black and Brooklyn-born rap star Mos Def. In the movie they play video store clerks who accidentally erase all of the store’s tapes so they hatch a scheme to recreate and record new low-budget versions of all the movies, starring themselves of course. The technique now has a name, coined by the film, sweding.

For the ultimate in “meta-sweding,” watch the official trailer above and then check out Michael Gondry’s sweded version of the same. Swede of a swede. Follow?

No matter, the real Mos Def comes to the Y on Feb 28 to talk about his music and acting career, activism, most recently in the Jena 6 case, and much more.
