What You Missed: Harry Connick, Jr.

Harry Connick, Jr.Harry Connick, Jr. made a surprise appearance at our Spring Gala Benefit Monday night.

“Coming Soon to Broadway” was the theme of the evening and Harry was kind enough to get up on stage and sing a song he just wrote for an upcoming Broadway production (about which he wouldn’t talk). It was his first public performance of the song—and what a song.

We learned something new about Harry Connick, Jr., too: He used to live at the 92nd Street Y. Literally. His first home in New York was a room in the Y’s de Hirsch Residence.  He worked here, too—as a 92nd Street Y usher. It was the only non-musical job he ever held.

Broadway has been treating Harry well. He was just received a Tony Award nomination as best actor in a musical for The Pajama Game, and his new album—Harry on Broadway Act I—has been climbing Amazon’s sales charts.
