Makor Community Service: Stanton Street Shul

image

We spent yesterday’s sunny afternoon at the Stanton Street Shul for a Makor Community Service “Rebuild & Renew” project. Team leader Shauna Wreschner organized roughly 15 Makor volunteers who scraped and repainted the front gate, cleaned out the back courtyard, organized the main corridor, and scraped, primed, and plastered a large section of the walls on the third floor. Volunteers, mainly in their mid-20s, were treated to a buffet lunch, souvenir “Stanton Street Shul Boot Camp” t-shirts, and a historical overview of the shul and neighborhood from docent/board member Elissa Sampson and Rabbi Yossi Pollak. If you’re interested in helping out the next time, or have the itch for other kinds of volunteering, check out the many diverse opportunities on the Makor Community Service page. An added bonus here is that Marty Radburd who ran the day is a one stop, everything you need to know about construction, person. Working with Marty is like a Jewish version of a mini-course from Habitat for Humanity as he divies out the work and teaches at the same time, including for newbies to building rehab.

The shul is a real piece of an otherwise disappearing Lower East Side in a neighborhood that is being transformed rapidly. It felt yesterday like the Makor group was reclaiming its heritage as it helped fix up the shul to help give it a better shot at being there for the 21st century.
