What You Missed: Dr. Marc Weissbluth’s Sleep Smarts

Dr. Marc Weissbluth, center, surrounded by well-rested parents

Chalk up another success for child sleep expert Dr. Marc Weissbluth. For the past month, the lucky parents pictured above have been in consultation with the popular author of Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child on their children’s sleep issues. It was done via email and coordinated by 92nd Street Y Parenting Center Director Sally Tannen, who 92Y Blog readers know well. This past Tuesday night, they met in person at Dr. Weissbluth’s Sleep Smarts event here to discuss what worked and what did not. Grateful emails followed:

Thank you again to Dr. Weissbluth, Sally, and all of the couples who participated. I had a great time listening to your experiences and learned a few things myself.

Happy sleeping everyone!

And:

Brad and I want to thank you for taking the time to work with us. We feel very fortunate to have been part of your study. Because of you, Brad and I have our lives back in the evening which we are very grateful for. We really enjoyed being part of the panel last night, it was a lot of fun sharing our experiences. One day we will tell Samantha that she has you to thank for helping her get her beauty sleep. We hope to be in touch and possibly share updates with you from time to time. Thanks again.

Dear Dr. Weissbluth,
My husband Craig and I have a beautiful, healthy 5 month year old baby boy, Zain. He had significant colic which was reduced with a change in formula. During the first three months, Zain slept whenever he wanted and required significant rocking to be put to sleep. He also used a pacifier...lived for the pacifier. Shortly prior to his 4th month we started sleep training with intervals, 5, 10 and 15 minutes between crying spells. We were advised by a pediatrician to take away the pacifier during naps since we were waking up between 2-4 times a night to put it back in his mouth when it fell out. He was weaned off his pacifier in 1 day and has not gone back. We then heard of your book. I could not put your book down and finished it within a few days. We did your method of extinction when he would cry at bedtime. It only took three days of on and off crying during naps. Now Zain sleeps between 5:30pm and 6pm through to 5:30am. He naps every two hours during the day. We schedule our out of the house activities between the naps. It is so worth it! Prior to the sleep trainig, Zain was cranky, fidgety (maybe also due to the colic who knows). You are such a life saver. Zain is so happy and his consistent sleep schedule also gives us the chance for private time as a couple. Thank you helping us with your insight. You are wonderful.

All the best,
Sofia and Craig Swanton

Dear Dr. Weissbluth,

I have used your book for two solid years with my slightly-older-than-2 year old.  I got your book off my shelf when I was sleep-deprived, irritable, unable to think straight; all due to inconsistent going-to-sleep patterns.  Once I made a decision between Methods A and B, I stuck with it and my daughter goes to sleep on her own 99% of the time.  People comment on how easy she is to get to bed.  She loves sleep, and is a beautiful baby.  We are also well-rested and happy and expecting #2.  While I know it’ll add some complexity to our lives, I’m looking forward to teaching this little one to sleep well through the night too.  Thanks so much for your expertise and passion!

Dear Dr. Weissbluth,
I have recently bought your book after reading very positive reviews about it. Your book provided a whole new insight into sleeping habits. I followed your advice; putting my baby in the cot when he showed signs of drowsiness. I actually use a pacifier to soothe him to sleep. He usually falls asleep while sucking the pacifier within 5-20 minutes. However, he tends to drop his pacifier very often before he goes into a deep sleep. Would his nap be considered a good sleep? In addition, lately, he has been waking up in the middle of the night crying. I would give him his pacifier and he would go back to sleep. But then, he would drop it a few times before finally getting into a deep sleep. Should we eliminate the use of a pacifier? Appreciate your advice on this.

Hello Dr. Wiessbluth,
I am such a fan of your book- I have given it as gifts to many friends and relatives.  I however find myself in a rut with my 2.75 year old (3 in November) and his napping, and some night-time disturbed sleep.  My son started potty training about 3 or 4 weeks ago and everything had been going good until this last week.  I think potty training is playing a part in this issue but I am not sure. I know he has had a little anxiety about having a bowl movement on the toilet.  He had been in underwear during the day and naps and bedtime I would put a diaper on, I recently put a diaper on more in the day to try and alieviate any stress he may have about this.  I know when he was around a year old, if I put him down for a nap, he wouldn’t fall asleep until after he had a bowl movement, then he could relax.  A week later, he is still getting up and playing and not relaxing very well.  We always have books before bed to try to get into the relaxed mode.  He had always been such and easy boy with napping and I am feeling very frusterated and I am not sure what to do. I wonder if I should quit with the potty training altogether for a bit and see if this helps.  What do you think?  Do you have any other suggestions?  I appreciate any help you can offer.  Thanks for all of your work!!!!

I have a 14 month old son who has been a great napper and night time sleeper since 3 months of age (we’ve been using your book since he was born).  Lately he wouldn’t take an afternoon nap so I figured it must be time to drop his morning nap.  We’ve been work on that and he is taking 1 nap a day for 1.5 to 2 hours.  But now it’s hard to get him to sleep at night, he never needed to be soothed and now he screams and almost throws up and we rock him to sleep.  He’s been extra clingy througout the day and isn’t walking yet (but cruising a lot).  Do you have any tips on how to handle all of this, I want to get him back on schedule and have him get the amount of sleep he needs.  He’s averaging about 13 hours in a 24 hour period right now.  Thanks.
