Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons, Futurama and other great cartoons, will be here October 10 with the “father of punk comics,” Gary Panter. But did you know:
- Groening named the main Simpson characters after members of his own family: his parents, Homer and Margaret (Marge or Marjorie in full), and his younger sisters, Lisa and Margaret (Maggie).
- In some of Groening’s original drawings of Homer Simpson, Homer’s hair is shaped like an “M” and his ear shaped like a “G,” spelling Groening’s initials.
- In 1989, he created a famous brochure for Apple Computer.
- His father, a descendant of Russian Mennonites in Canada, spoke Plautdietsch.
- There’s never been an official animated version of Groening’s early comic strip, Life in Hell, but that hasn’t stopped fans from creating one.
