92Y Culture Klatsch Q&A With Leslie Goshko

imageLeslie Goshko is an award-winning storyteller who’s won our hearts in the latest edition of Culture Klatsch (that’s her in the photo at left with Ira Glass, “the man, the myth, the legend.").

When she’s not busy resting Diet Cokes on her (useful!) copy of Infinite Jest, watching “Dance Moms”, or performing with the improvised storytelling rock band The BTK Band, Leslie serves as host of her monthly storytelling show Sideshow Goshko. Leslie brings her Sideshow to 92YTribeca tomorrow night with A+ storytellers in tow, including former “Blue’s Clues” host Steve Burns, comedian Tom Shillue, and Moth GrandSlam Champion Ed Gavagan.

Where do you go for news when you start your day?
Well, since I’m sure Facebook and my college roommate’s blog don’t count, I’d say the radio. I still listen to an actual radio. It’s in my kitchen. My dad gave it to me. Hi, Dad!

What are your favorite websites?
I have a feeling this answer is just the first in a series of “maybe I shouldn’t reveal that” moments but…I daily check wwtdd.com. And in case you’re wondering what that stands for, it’s “What Would Tyler Durden Do.” Yes, Tyler Durden from “Fight Club.” Apparently I’m a college-aged frat boy who wants you to know that the first rule about Fight Club is...well, I don’t remember. But the second rule is fighting!

Actually it’s a pop culture site.

How much do you use Twitter and Facebook (or other social networking services)?
They are intravenously inserted into my body (shameless twitter plug @ohmygoshko).

What book are you currently reading (or the last one you read)? Print or digital?
Books? What are these “books” you speak of? Oh, you mean coasters! Infinite Jest has saved my table from many a diet coke ring. I’d like to see your Kindle do that!

92Y Culture Klatsch Q&A With Kevin Janus

image

This Monday was Thanksgiving in Canada, and we spent the day being thankful for Canadian comedian Kevin Janus. Kevin’s taking a break from trolling Toronto Blue Jays stats blogs long enough to host The Comedy Igloo this Thursday at 92YTribeca (Oct 13), with special guests Leo Allen and Matt McCarthy. We’re really looking forward to hearing more about Celine Dion and the “Friday Night Lights” season 2 murder plotline.

Super Kevin Janus fans (and stalkers), can get a bigger fix below, with the 92Y Culture Klatsch Q&A With Kevin Janus. That’s where you’ll learn you won’t find him on Facebook. “I’m a conscientious objector to Facebook,” he told us.

Where do you go for news when you start your day?
To keep up with serious Canadian news, like the guy who broke into Celine Dion’s house and took a bath, I follow CTV News on Twitter and read The Toronto Star online.  For more trivial news, I read the print edition of The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times online.

What are your favorite websites?
Honestly, I don’t really go directly to websites anymore.  I follow every one of my favorite websites on Twitter. All 846 of them. One of the few websites I do still visit directly is called Batter’s Box.  It’s a nerdy, stats-heavy Toronto Blue Jays baseball blog. Because yes. Canadians do love baseball.

How much do you use Twitter and Facebook (or other social networking services)?
I use Twitter all the time.  But I refuse to have a Facebook account.  I’m a conscientious objector to Facebook. I’m sorry, what? No. That’s perfectly consistent.

92Y Culture Klatsch Q&A With Liam McEneaney

image

Comedian Liam McEneaney gives us a peek inside the wonderland of his brain in the latest edition of Culture Klatsch. He’s hosting “Liam McEneaney’s Writings with Music,” tomorrow, October 6 at 92YTribeca with special guests Myla Goldberg, Christopher Weingarten, and Kambri Crews. If he’s half as good at asking questions as he is at answering ours, tomorrow night will be seriously fun. We’ll assume (and hope) that Liam will discuss his penchant for pets in funny outfits at length with Mr. Weingarten, founder of Hipster Puppies, tomorrow.

Where do you go for news when you start your day?
I used to go to morning news shows, it doesn’t matter which one because it’s the same show on every channel; because instead of news about the world, I like cooking tips and pets in funny outfits. When I want a view of the world from someone slightly more knowledgeable and informative than the TV news, I like to read Youtube comments.

What are your favorite websites?
As far as I’m concerned, 92Y.org is the only website on the Internet.

How much do you use Twitter and Facebook (or other social networking services)?
Are you asking how often I update @heyitsliam, my personal account? Or are you talking about @tyfcomedy, which is the Twitter handle for my weekly show Tell Your Friends! Or maybe you mean @tyfconcertfilm, which is the Twitter feed for the concert film based on that show?

In any case, I am usually too busy on Youtube, posting my hilarious “7-11 was an inside job” comments to bother with any of that.

92Y Culture Klatsch Q&A With Dylan Brody

image

Dylan Brody is currently touring his one-person storytelling show, More Arts / Less Martial, a must-see for anyone who loves the storytelling form, laughter, the martial arts, peace, humanity or any combination thereof.

He’s bringing his show to 92YTribeca tomorrow, September 14. So we sent him the 92Y Culture Klatsch Q&A to learn more about his culture and media diets. For example, we learned he subscribes to both The New Yorker and (sometimes) to Granta. “I also subscribe,” he told us, “to several Marvel Comics titles and every time a new comic book comes in the mail I am filled with a childlike glee.” And he has three two dogs, named Sir Corwin the Beautiful Dog-Faced Dog, Brindled Beast of Sylmar and Lord Buckley Sweetlips, Greatest of all Dane Mutts (The Dinosaur Slaying Dog).

Read the full Q&A below.

Employee Of The Month Catie Lazarus

image

Our pal Catie Lazarus – host of Employee of the Month at 92YTribeca on Thursday – talks with the New York Post about how she turned her not-so-dreamy job search into a talk show about dream jobs.

“I could apply and apply for jobs and hear nothing back, but I found I could get informational interviews with just about anyone,” she says.

Thus was born “Employee of the Month,” a “talk show about dream jobs,” where Lazarus, who’s also a comedian and performer, interviews people with enviable careers.

Catie is still looking for a job. “I really just want a writing job,” she told the New York Post. “And I can also do voice-overs.”

Employee of the Month happens August 18 at 92YTribeca and features critically acclaimed performance artist Aurelia Thierrée, documentary filmmaker Julia Bacha and Emmy Award-winner Kevin Clash, best known as the man behind the beloved Sesame Street character Elmo. Plus, music from singer Noam Weinstein. Tickets are available here.

Culture Klatsch: 92Y Q&A With Ann And Fiona

image

We’re going to go ahead and add Ann Design and Fiona Walsh to the list of comedy duos that have stood the test of time. They are bringing their new show “Listen to this… with Ann and Fiona” to 92YTribeca, tomorrow, August 4. Joining them will be a bunch of others, including Comedy Central headliner Christian Finnegan.

And today, they are the latest subjects of the 92Y Culture Klatsch Q&A, where we learned they prefer to get their news from Dunkin’ Donuts, a raunchy gossip site, and Hoda and Kathie Lee. Check it out:

Where do you go for news when you start your day?

Fiona Walsh: First place I go is the hilarious site of my friend Michael K at dlisted.com. It’s as worthy as any news site on the internet and it always, always guarantees me a smile!!

Ann Design: When I start my day, I like to get my news from random sources. Hoda and Kathie Lee are one source, nothing beats getting hard news from two women drunk on wine. I also listen to the talk of the day while on line at Dunkin’ Donuts. Boy, there sure are a lot of smart people at DD early in the morning.
