Who went shopping this Friday, and more importantly, what did you buy?! Or are you waiting for Cyber Monday sales today? We passed on the shopping, and held a double feature at 92YTribeca instead, showing Mallrats and Clueless, and fun was the order of the evening. But you don’t have to take our word for it. The blogger behind Go Do NYC attended as well, and took to her blog to tell everyone about it. She writes:
It is a really great space. They have a little cafe with big windows, comfy chairs and a few televisions with sports on and music low enough to talk over. The cafe serves interesting snacks and beer and wine. At the intermission we ordered the hummus and the chocolate pudding and both were quite tasty.
In addition to the cafe, there is a screening room where we saw the movies, it is fairly small, seating maybe 75 people and a big screen. But the theater is new and seats were comfortable and you almost felt as if you were watching a movie in your own private screening room with a bunch of your friends. You could bring the yummy food into the theater to watch the movie.
Jewish Life: 3GNY Winter Shabbat. Dine on a delicious Shabbat dinner, and hear guest speaker and Holocaust survivor Bernard Gotfryd share his story and talk about his book, Anton the Dove Fancier and Other Tales of the Holocaust.
Video: Trailer for The Adventures of the Baron of Munchausen
Director Terry Gilliam is still looking for a muse after all these years. In 1988, he came close to finding one when he cast an unknown Uma Thurman in the role of Venus/Rose in The Adventures of the Baron of Munchausen. But, he tells Black Book magazine: “she left him for another rebel named Quentin,” and never returned. :(
Next Friday, Dec 4, 92YTribeca is showing The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, a film that has an 85% rating on the influential film review website Rotten Tomatoes. “The special effects are astonishing,” wrote Roger Ebert, “but so is the humor with which they are employed.”
Beyond Ipanema: Brazilian Waves in Global Music (Ondas Brasileiras Na Música Global): Dec 10. Part of the series Cinema Tropical‘s Music + Film Series: Janeiro in New York.
Metropolitan: Dec 12, with Director Whit Stillman in person for this special 20th Anniversary Screening.
Share Your Story™: The 92nd Street Y Saved My Life!
In the latest Share Your Story™, watch as Aaron talks about moving to New York City with his wife after 32 years in Westport, CT. (They chose the area to be near us!). Aaron is 82, and gives credit and thanks to the health facilities at the 92Y May Center for Health and Fitness, which he visits three times a week, for keeping him healthy and happy. Aaron went on to say: “The 92Y saved my life.” We are humbled by your thanks, and offer thanks to you Aaron, as well!
If you would like to add exercise and fitness to your own schedule, you can sign up for a free trial workout. The 92Y May Center boasts 125 pieces of exercise equipment; a 25-yard pool; over 100 weekly exercise classes; basketball and racquetball; a wellness center and certified professional staff.
We also have a wide berth of classes and events at 92Y for seniors. Take a look here.
That’s a question the Village Voicerecently asked Brooklyn resident and author Jonathan Ames in an interview. He responded:
Almost nothing. Some cheese in a plastic Tupperware thing and some olives. An old coffee I must have planned to reheat. A jar of jam and a jar of relish given to me as presents. Two old bottles of Perrier. One old kombucha. One old bottle of cod-liver oil.
We love it! And it seems as if we started a trend. Finding out what is in your kitchen is so hot right now.
We like the line of questioning so much that we recently created a video series based around a similar concept. Perhaps you saw the premier video with New York Times reporter Jennifer 8. Lee?
Lee will be here for a talk: Jews and Chinese Food: A Love Affair, on Dec 20. Purchase your tickets here. The next 92Y Fridges video coming up will be with Mike Colameco, host and producer of Public Television’s Colameco’s Food Show. We’ve shot it and edited it, and are getting ready to post it online.
It looks like we will have to see about doing one with Jonathan Ames as well!

Paul C Williams, married with twins, first started teaching music to children while working for the Shaftsbury Society in England. He has a parallel career as a musician and singer songwriter, performing regularly in New York City under the stage name Paul Clements, and has written music for Musical Theatre, Off Broadway and Nickelodeon. He recently wrote Reaching Out To say Hello for the 92nd Street Y’s Educational Outreach Program.
Paul teaches The Music Room! classes at 92Y, classes that are based on the concept that everyone possesses an affinity for music, and that by nurturing your child’s innate ability, you can maximize his or her potential for a lifelong association with music. Paul and the 92Y School of Music both believe that children learn from experience. “By providing a variety of stimuli for children and by neither limiting them, nor forcing them,” Paul maintains, “we are giving them the greatest gift that we can.”
During The Music Room! class, each child receives a copy of The Music Room CD that contains specially composed original music for you and your child to experience at home. You can listen to two tracks from a Music Room CD below. The seven session classes are now accepting registrations, click here to learn more and sign up.
92Y Podcast: From the Poetry Center Archive: Paul Auster: A Buzz in the Head
Over the years, the Poetry Center has teamed with The Paris Review to present numerous on-stage conversations. These talks—with Chinua Achebe, Norman Mailer, Iris Murdoch, Günter Grass, Tony Kushner, Salman Rushdie, Pat Barker, Czesław Miłosz, Arthur Miller and others—often led to the Writers-at-Work interviews which appeared in the magazine.
In September of 2002, before a reading from his Book of Illusions, Paul Auster spoke with critic Michael Wood. Their discussion is today’s featured recording. Here is an excerpt from the published interview, which ran in The Paris Review’s Fall 2003 issue:
“I was always drawn to books that doubled back on themselves, that brought you into the world of the book, even as the book was taking you into the world. The manuscript as hero, so to speak. Wuthering Heights is that kind of novel. The Scarlet Letter is another. The frames are fictitious, of course, but they give a groundedness and credibility to the stories that other novels didn’t have for me. They posit the work as an illusion—which more traditional forms of narrative don’t—and once you accept the “unreality” of the enterprise, it paradoxically enhances the truth of the story. The words aren’t written in stone by an invisible author-god. They represent the efforts of a flesh-and-blood human being, and this is very compelling. The reader becomes a participant in the unfolding of the story—not just a detached observer.”
Mr. Auster returns to the Poetry Center on Monday, November 30, to read from his new novel Invisible. (Check out his recent interview with New York magazine on it.) He is paired with Spanish writer Javier Marías—whose Poison, Shadow and Farewell was recently called “the first authentic literary masterpiece of the 21st century” by The Guardian. Mr. Auster will be introduced by Rick Moody; and Mr. Marías by Wyatt Mason.
In an ongoing effort to share with our readers some of the great literary moments which the Poetry Center has presented across the decades, this blog has begun to feature regular postings of archival recordings by some of the best writers of our time—many of whom, like Paul Auster, are returning this season. To purchase tickets to Monday’s readings by Mr. Auster and Mr. Marías, please click here. For more information about the rest of the upcoming season, please click here. And for access to other recordings from the Poetry Center archive, please click here.
Unterberg Poetry Center webcasts and access to our archive are made possible in part by the generous support of the Sidney E. Frank Foundation.

The young man in the video above spoke to us at last year’s 92Y Street Fest, for the Share Your Story™ video series. Watch as he talks about moving from CA to NY, which he didn’t enjoy much when he first arrived; it all seemed too crowded and noisy. He has since learned to love New York City, and credits his time at 92Y Camps for that.
Check out some previous Share Your Story videos below, and see all of them on our YouTube.
