92Y Video: Colum McCann and John Banville

Bailey Kennedy who writes at Paperbackgirl.com attended Wednesday’s reading that featured two great Irish writers, Colum McCann and John Banville, and notes:

The q+a session rounding out the evening had everyone in fits of laughter thanks to Banville’s dry wit and McCann’s gregariousness. The first question was directed at both writers and focused on the anxiety of influence as Irish writers. Banville leaned toward the mic and said, “We have giants or nothing. There are no mediocre writers. It is like the Easter Island statues are standing behind us saying ‘what have you done little man?’”

You can read more of her recap here and watch the video above for an excerpt from that Q&A. In addition to addressing the Irish writer legacy topic, they discuss the influence of their backgrounds in newspaper journalism on their writing and McCann answers a question about his relationship with New York City after writing Let the Great World Spin which he confesses: “I think I’ll probably go away for awhile just in order to love it again.”

Upcoming Readings:

  • Words and Music: Péter Esterházy and András Schiff: Mar 1
  • Suzan-Lori Parks: Mar 8
  • The Critic’s Voice: First Reads with James Wood: Mar 22
  • Ian McEwan: Apr 6

Unterberg Poetry Center webcasts and access to our archive are made possible in part by the generous support of the Sidney E. Frank Foundation.

You’ve Got To Know When To Hold Them…

Lady Gaga has a poker face, do you? Ellen Leikind, author of the new book PokerWoman: : How to Win in Love, Life, and Business using the Principles of Poker, offers women tips on using poker strategies for life and did a segment Wednesday morning (shown above) on WPIX. Ellen is also POKERPrimaDIVAS™ instructor at the 92nd Street Y, where she teaches women to apply the lessons of poker in business, personal, and professional lives, as well learning the basics of the game in prep for your participation in a poker tournament!

Some of the lessons Ellen imparts? In poker, you have to be brave and assertive, and know what you want. And in your job, “if you’re looking for a promotion, you have to ask for it.” WPIX featured some more tips:

    • Stop betting like a girl and go all in!
    • Creative bluffing (the differences between little white lies vs. deception)
    • How to play to win, instead of playing not to lose
    • Knowing when to fold’em…and get out of a dead end job or relationship
    • Overcoming losses and getting back in the game

What other ways can you apply the practices of poker to your life? Cashing out while you are ahead? Leave your own ideas in the comments.

The next POKERPrimaDIVAS™ class begins May 3, register here. If you prefer the dominos to cards, Mah-Jongg For Beginners classes are coming up as well; the next ones begin on Apr 13.

92Y Show & Tell: Marisa Meltzer

Author Marisa Meltzer, (Girl Power: The Nineties Revolution in Music) is the premier guest of the new video series: 92Y Show & Tell. While at her lovely Brooklyn (Brooklyn) abode, Marisa, a big fan of 90’s women-centered art and music, showed us some of her favorite music and zines from that time. As those inspired her, Marisa’s own book on this era is inspiring a new generation of women.

She also interviewed with Time Out New York this week, (where she offered her top five girl-powered anthems, and top four girl-power icons) and TONY observed that Marisa has culture on her side now: “...everyone is wearing neon leggings and flannel.” The conversation turned to the scene in the 90’s:

You don’t really see these women-centered scenes like riot grrrl, or even something banal like the Lilith Fair, much anymore—

Well, Lilith Fair is coming back! It’s reforming. You can come with me. I’m going to go and face my late ’90s snobbery at the Lilith Fair. Heart Is playing, and Ke$ha, of “Tik-Tok” fame. It’s a strange and diverse lineup. I’m excited to see what happens. There are lots of awesome bands with girls in them, but I think there’s less of a sense right now of, “I’m in a band and I’m a woman and I have feminist values.” I think that it’s certainly missing from culture, whether it’s indie or mainstream culture, and I certainly hope it comes back.

On Mar 3 at 92YTribeca, Marisa will be joined by Emily Gould, author of And the Heart Says Whatever (to be published by Free Press in May 2010); Elizabeth Spiridakis “the lunatic behind the White Lightning website”; Sean Fennessey, Director of Merchandising for eMusic.com; and music by Supercute! for further in-depth discussion on “What It Feels Like for a Girl”: Women, Music and the Girl Power Revolution. Tickets can be purchased here.

    The Credibility Of Colum McCann

    image

Colum McNann and John Banville were here last night, and McCann was quoted via Twitter asking: “Don’t all writers live in Brooklyn?”

    Wait, do they??

We should get Time Out New York readers to chime in here, seeing as TONY‘s latest issue explores the Brooklyn/Manhattan divide with a cover story that aggravates the age old question: Brooklyn or Manhattan?

How about we start a list? What writers live in Manhattan, and what writers live in Brooklyn? Answer in the comments…

Browse all upcoming events in our Main Reading Series here, where tickets for those aged 35 and under are just $10.

    America’s Dirty Secret? Dirty Refrigerators

imageSo says the Wall Street Journal, in an article that reports most Americans clean their refrigerators once or twice a year. (Guilty as charged!) Gawker called it ”Refrigerignorance."

We are suddenly newly inspired to clean ours! And...we learned a few new things from the WSJ article. For instance, though the door might be the perfect spot for that carton on milk, it’s the worst spot for it as the door is the warmest part of the fridge. Also, get this...you should not keep apples and carrots next to each other. Apples produce ethylene, a substance that can cause some foods (including carrots) to spoil sooner. Who knew??

Our “research” shows that cooks and foodies keep a nicer refrigerators than others. We’ve seen a number of their refrigerators when filming our 92Y Fridges series, and never saw anything objectionable or dirty. As a matter of fact, all our video subjects seemed conscious of good fridge habits. When filming 92Y Fridges with Mike Colameco, Colameco informed us he keeps many bottles of water in his fridge not to drink, but to help keep the fridge cool and humid. And André Soltner was a little embarrassed when he pulled some cheese out from his refrigerator; it should be kept at room temperature he explained, but confided that his wife likes it chilled. Check out all 92Y Fridges videos here.

You can learn more about what the pros already know at Cooking with Mike Colameco classes, and on Apr 26 join Padma Lakshmi, Amanda Hesser, Kathleen Collins and Charlie Trotter with Alexandra Leaf as moderator for: Food on the Tube: How TV Shapes the Way We Think About Food.

Jeff Garlin: “I am a food addict, no doubt about it”

    image

This is not a picture of Curb Your Enthusiasm star and comedian Jeff Garlin. This is a picture Jeff Garlin saw in the LivingXL catalog for a Cabin Comfort Inflatable Pillow that looked so much like him that he knew it was time to do something about his weight. He talks about his food addiction in this recent ABC News report (cameo by Larry David) and reveals how it almost cost him his life when his wife was pregnant with their second child. You can catch him this Sunday at 92Y with Ira Glass of This American Life. He will be signing copies of his new book My Footprint: Carrying the Weight of the World following the talk. Just don’t offer him any doughnuts.

92Y Video: Miklós Perényi, cello & András Schiff, piano perform Beethoven

In this video, cellist Miklós Perényi and pianist András Schiff perform Beethoven: Adagio cantabile - Allegro vivace from Cello Sonata in A, Op. 69 at 92Y in 2007. One YouTube commenter remarks, “At last a duo where the piano doesn’t kill the cello… The clarity is fantastic and the music making serene.” We agree. Perényi returns tomorrow, Feb 23, with pianist Benjamin Hochman for our Hungarian celebration and again on Feb 27 for Schiff’s In Focus series on Franz Josef Haydn.
