92Y Video: Péter Esterházy Reads Celestial Harmonies
In a rare U.S. appearance by one of Europe’s leading writers, Peter Esterházy read from Celestial Harmonies, a work that Mario Vargas Llosa described as an “ambitious magnum opus, a masterwork,” at the 92nd Street Y on Monday. Esterházy’s reading that evening also included musical interludes (not shown in the video) by his dear friend András Schiff.
In the clip above, Esterházy reads from his novel and is interviewed by Peter Sherwood, with André Balog interpreting. Sherwood asked Esterházy what it was like to be a member of a distinguished aristocratic family in post-war state socialist Hungary. “I had a short answer,” Esterházy. “It was suboptimal.” With humor and perspective, he went on to offer a fuller picture of his life during this time.

The Heavy came to play at 92YTribeca in Jan, and Baeble Music was their with their video equipment to record the set in full. You can see highlights above. The full set, almost an hour long, is at Baeble Music here.
To say that The Heavy specializes in producing ginormous sounds is a bit of an understatement. Unfortunately, that also makes the immensity of their sound almost impossible to describe. Just know it’s big. But theirs’ is also a well-oiled practice in musical schizophrenia. R&B, Soul, Funk, Punk, Rock...it’s all in there, coming together in the kind of rich, robust, and outlandishly cool musical flavor that’s built for the dance floor . All apologies if the cameras start to shake a little over the course of this performance. It’s impossible to resist.
