Garrison Keillor REALLY Wants To Talk About Tom Lehrer And Lyrics & Lyricists

image

As we mentioned here earlier, Garrison Keillor had Debra Monk & Rob Fisher on stage for the latest A Prairie Home Companion, where they discussed the upcoming Lyrics & Lyricists next weekend—which Monk and Fisher will be performing in.

Well...David Garrison, writer & stage director for next weeks L&L, just stopped by the offices at 92nd Street Y to check on a few things, and he has informed us that Fisher, Monk and himself have been invited back to tomorrow’s A Prairie Home Companion!

This is really so meta, as Garrison himself has read here at 92Y several times.

A Prairie Home Companion will be recorded in front of an audience at Town Hall this Saturday at 6pm.  WNYC broadcasts it live, check their schedule here (PDF).

Tickets to Lyrics & Lyricists™—Poisoning Pigeons in the Park: The Art of the Satiric Comedy Song for May 8, 9 and 10 can be purchased here.

The music of Tom Lehrer, which we featured here recently, was showcased today on NPR’s Fresh Air: Tom Lehrer: ‘60s Satirist Still Strikes A Chord

UPDATE:
More L&L related news! Sheldon Harnick, the Pulitzer Prize-winning lyricist and host of Lyrics & Lyricists™—Poisoning Pigeons in the Park: The Art of the Satiric Comedy Song, was in the WQXR studio yesterday (on his 86th birthday!) and sat down for an hour-long interview. Listen here.

The New York Times On James Shapiro’s “Contested Will”

imageThis Sunday’s New York Times Book Review features a review (online now) of James Shapiro’s new book Contested Will: Who Wrote Shakespeare?:

Shapiro, a professor of English and comparative literature at Columbia University, uses the fight over Shakespeare’s identity to show how our views of the past are shaped by the contingencies of the evidence that reaches us, and how we’re swayed by the changing spiritual weather of our own time. Though dozens of alternate authors have been proposed over the years — four more while he worked on the book, he writes — he concentrates here on what he calls the two “best-documented and most consequential” candidacies: those of the philosopher and courtier Francis Bacon and Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford. The shifts in their reputations over the last 150 years have been sufficiently extreme to think of them as the reverse of Ben Jonson’s famous praise of Shakespeare: they were not for all time, but of an age.

On Sunday, May 2, as part of the Books & Bagels series, join Shapiro at the 92nd Street Y for a talk by one of our most renowned Shakespeare scholars.

Related: On May 10, “Discovery"/Boston Review Poetry Contest Winners will read from their work. Tickets can be purchased here, and are just $10.00 for those aged 35 and under.

Sketching Terrance Hayes and Natasha Trethewey

image
Terrance Hayes and Natasha Trethewey at the 92nd Street Y as sketched by Claudia Carlson

Blogger, poet, sketch artist and new favorite guest of the 92nd Street Y Claudia Carlson attended the Terrance Hayes and Natasha Trethewey reading on Monday evening.

Unbeknown to us, she sketched both authors, posting the drawings and a review of the evening on her blog.

This is not the first time Claudia has honored the guests on stage with a sketch. She drew Chip Kidd and Neil Gaiman at their event in November, 2008.

And that’s not all! When illustrator Norn Custon was in attendance for Anthony DeCurtis’s interview with Yoko Ono in 2007, guess what he did? Yup, he drew Yoko.

Any other artists in the house? Have you drawn, painted, sketched, created a dance interpretation or a claymation film of any our events? Let us know in the comments! Maybe you’ve sketched one of our Tweets? (Hey, it’s not as weird as it sounds).

Related: On May 10, “Discovery"/Boston Review Poetry Contest Winners will read from their work. Tickets can be purchased here, and are just $10.00 for those aged 35 and under.

Mayor Bloomberg’s Hope NYC For Poem in Your Pocket Day

imageAs City Room reminded us via Twitter, the City of New York is sponsoring the 8th annual Poem in Your Pocket Day.

In honor of Poem in Your Pocket Day, Mayor Bloomberg, inspired by the first line of Emily Dickinson’s Hope, came up with his own poem:

Hope NYC
By Mike Bloomberg

“Hope” is the thing with feathers
That makes our City soar
It will take us to the future
As it’s carried us before

Hope is the thing with feathers
That travels all our streets
It sings in every language
It sometimes even tweets

And though we may not see it
It perches everywhere
In new shops and small businesses
In every schoolroom chair

It could be our famous pigeon
Or fabled red-tailed hawk
Hope is the thing with feathers
That flies throughout New YAWK

Now your turn. Feel free to find inspiration in the 92nd Street Y Poetry Center Audio Archive.

Related: On May 10, “Discovery"/Boston Review Poetry Contest Winners will read from their work. Tickets can be purchased here, and are just $10.00 for those aged 35 and under.

General Petraeus: Fan Of The PowerPoint

image
General Petraeus utilizing a PowerPoint presentation at the 92nd Street Y last week / Photo Credit: Joyce Culver

Above, Gen. David H. Petraeus uses a PowerPoint on stage at the 92nd Street Y last week. So it was with interest that we read today’s report in The New York Times on PowerPoints as the bane of military commanders everywhere:

Like an insurgency, PowerPoint has crept into the daily lives of military commanders and reached the level of near obsession. The amount of time expended on PowerPoint, the Microsoft presentation program of computer-generated charts, graphs and bullet points, has made it a running joke in the Pentagon and in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Brig. Gen. H. R. McMaster, for one, is not fan. The Times reported McMaster: “banned PowerPoint presentations when he led the successful effort to secure the northern Iraqi city of Tal Afar in 2005...”

The paper of record also spoke to Gen. David H. Petraeus, who confided that although sitting through PowerPoints was “just agony,” he appreciates the ability to of PowerPoints to display trends and maps. “He has,” wrote The Times, “also conducted more than a few PowerPoint presentations himself.”

Indeed he has. As a matter of fact, during his lecture at 92Y, the General even had a few quips about needing to know how to use it. He gave special mention to the laser pointer as one perk of having to give a PowerPoint presentation!

Browse all upcoming Lectures & Conversations at 92Y, and remember that Eliot Spitzer, former Governor of the State of New York will be here on May 2. Read more on the 92Y Blog, and if you have any questions for Mr. Spitzer, let us know and we will do our best to get it to him during the Q&A.

7th Annual Sheba Film Festival

The video above features an excerpt from Children of the Bible by director Nitza Gonen. The film focuses on the Israeli rapper and informal educator Jeremy “Cool” Abash who works towards changing the humiliated and depressed image of the Ethiopian community in Israel, both in its own eyes and in the eyes of Israeli society, by bringing members of the Ethiopian community closer to their tradition—the songs, the meaning of Ethiopian names, stories about the lives of the Ethiopian community and the journey that has taken on mythical proportions.

The film is part of the BINA Cultural Foundation‘s 7th Annual Sheba Film Festival, and will screen at the 92nd Street Y on Sunday May 2, followed by a panel discussion. Tickets are available for purchase here.

And don’t forget tonight’s special concert with Israel’s international pop star, Noa, and guest star Mira Awad.

Taking Questions, Asking Names Later

image

Did you ever want to get a question answered by one of our lecturers? Here’s your chance! We picked a few upcoming guests that might get you thinking, and started a discussion page on Facebook. Feel free to leave a comment with your question for them, or any other upcoming lecturer for that matter.

We’ll make it even cooler, if your question gets used on stage during the Q&A—like we did with Ted Koppel—you get the glorious recognition as well as two free tickets to an upcoming lecture of your choice, pending availability.

We’ve picked three upcoming events and guests for consideration, but feel free to send questions for any event: Alan Brinkley with Frank Rich (May 11); Sean Hayes in Conversation with Jordan Roth (May 24 at 92YTribeca); and Why Documentaries Matter with Rosie O’Donnell and Other Guests including Sheila Nevins, DA Pennebaker. Chris Hegedus, Al Maysles, and Alexandra Pelosi (May 26).

So get questioning! Leave them here in the comments area, or on the discussion board set up on Facebook.

92Y Video: Matisyahu On Judaism

On March 16, Reggae musician Matisyahu was interviewed by Thane Rosenbaum at the 92nd Street Y.

In the clip above, Matisyahu explains what Judaism means to him: “I think Judaism is fully a global religion. I think the main ideas in Judaism have inspired so many religions and so many people around the world. So, I think that’s what Judaism can be, and that’s what Judaism should be.”

During the event, Matisyahu performed with internet sensation P.S. 22 Children’s Chorus, check out video of their rehearsal.

Next Tuesday, April 27, catch Israel’s Noa In Concert with Mira Awad; tickets can be purchased here.
