What You Missed: First Kiss with Elizabeth Spiridakis, Marisa Meltzer and More
Stories about first kisses tend to include the whole rainbow of emotions that we associate with formative adolescent experiences. They’re awkward and sweet. Often they are unintentionally hilarious. For their one-off zine, First Kiss, Marisa Meltzer and Elizabeth Spiridakis collected accounts of first kisses. This past Wednesday, they invited some of the people behind their first kiss memories on stage at 92YTribeca.
From the look of photos at 92YTribeca’s Flickr page, Vice magazine founder Gavin McInnes told a story that was at turns cringe-worthy and shocking.

92Y Video: The Correspondence of Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell
In her first letter to Robert Lowell, dated May 12, 1947, Elizabeth Bishop wrote, “I was supposed to read, too, up at the YMHA Saturday evening but couldn’t make it, and I hope my absence was a help rather than a hindrance.” While the poets never shared an evening at the 92nd Street Y Poetry Center, the recently published Words in Air: The Complete Correspondence Between Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell makes clear that they shared much during their 30-year friendship. And in a dramatic presentation of their letters and some of their poems on Monday night, Tony-nominated actors Kate Burton and Michael Cumpsty brought that friendship to life. “Almost every selection,” wrote The New Yorker in their review, “captured some measure of perfection.”
More than that, though, they are examples of letter-writing as a peculiar and essential art form. Just as Bishop and Lowell taught courses in poetry, so, too, could they have taught courses in correspondence—in how to perfectly combine irony and sincerity; gossip and critical thinking; and good cheer and sorrow to form an elegant epistle.
Above, enjoy a clip of an exchange between the two poets late in their lives, as they reminisce about when they were young and newly acquainted.
The Mediabistro Circus: Visionaries and Provocateurs: Women in Media + Technology was held May 20 at 92YTribeca. The event included over a dozen women with important roles in the industry, such as: Susan Lyne, CEO of the Gilt Groupe; Alice Mckown, Executive Director of Marketing for Condé Nast Digital and Meredith Fisher, Digital Media Director for Diane von Furstenberg were just some of the speakers present.
The event was heavy on talk about social media. Befitting the discussion, the hashtag #mbcircus was used on Twitter for people live-tweeting and following along; you can review all those tweets here.
“Anytime anyone writes a question [on Facebook], we respond within ten minutes,” she said. “Our fans appreciate the personal connection.”
Fisher also said that Diane has taken a very active role in promoting the company’s Twitter presence. “We do mix our Twitter feed between corporate and personal. Anytime Diane tweets, she initials it DVF. We never send out tweets assuming we’re someone else.”

Those of you who work and live on the Upper East Side have likely seen the latest ad campaign for the 92Y May Center. The ads, on phone booths and bus shelters from Madison Avenue to Second Avenue, between East 86th Street and East 94th Street, feature not models, but real members of the 92Y May Center.
Manhattan news site DNAinfo reported on the ads yesterday, and noted one in particular, featuring “Rob the Physician,” has received a disproportionate amount of attention. Stacey Eisler, deputy director of the May Center, was quoted as saying: “The doctor is our version of McDreamy.”
