Opening up the Conversation at the 2010 Nobel Laureates Conference
From our friends and invaluable partners at Skype:
Powerful change often starts with conversations. At Skype, we are proud that our software is used to enable conversations that lead to the betterment of humankind. We saw that last week when Skype video calling was used to connect individuals from Africa, Europe, even other U.S. states, into the very important conversations taking place at 92nd Street Y about achieving the Millennium Development Goals at the Social Good Summit presented by Mashable, 92Y and the U.N. Foundation.
Thus, we are honored that through our partnership with 92Y we can continue bringing individuals into important conversations that lead to powerful changes, as will happen next week, October 5 - 6, during the 2010 Conference of Nobel Laureates. Presented by 92Y and the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity, in partnership with Skype, the conference in New York City brings together Nobel Prize winners and business leaders for an intergenerational, multi-disciplinary discussion of pressing world issues and changes in corporate leadership.
Read more on the Skype blog and purchase tickets to the public event with Elie Wiesel and David Axelrod, Senior Adviser to President Obama (pictured above). It will be a fascinating conversation.

2010 Conference of Nobel Laureates Public Plenary With Elie Wiesel and David Axelrod

The 2010 Conference of Nobel Laureates taking place October 5th and 6th brings together Nobel Prize winners in a variety of disciplines, including Professor Elie Wiesel and leading entrepreneurs and innovators. A short list of Nobel Prize winners who will attend include Peter Agre (Chemistry, 2003); Philip Anderson (Physics, 1977); Sheldon Glashow (Physics, 1979) and Mario Malina (Chemistry, 1995). As well, Daniel Schwartz, Executive Director of Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity, Josh Silverman, CEO of Skype and Leslie Gelb, President Emeritus at the Council on Foreign Relations are just a few industry leaders who will also be in attendance.
The 2010 Conference is modeled in part on the Foundation’s four Nobel Conferences in Petra, Jordan, which took place annually between 2005 and 2008, co-hosted by the King Abdullah II Fund for Development. The conference at the 92nd Street Y seeks to extend the impact of the conference by pairing the wisdom and expertise of academics, artists and scientists with a new generation of business and media executives.
Participants of the 2010 conference, meeting in private sessions, will once again address the Middle East, the importance of youth engagement, education and economic development. In addition, they will also discuss the need for a new, sustainable approach to corporate leadership that will ultimately be a force for good in our fast-changing, increasingly transparent and inter-connected world.
At the conclusion of the conference on Wednesday evening, October 6, Elie Wiesel and David Axelrod, Senior Advisor to President Barack H. Obama, will provide the summaries of the discussions. Purchase tickets to that panel discussion here.
The New York Times‘ Literary Map of Manhattan, showcasing “where imaginary New Yorkers lived, worked, played, drank, walked and looked at ducks” is making the roundsanew on the internet. (The map first appeared in 20062005). The renewed activity in the map is testament to enduring interest New York City’s literary history, as well as continued enjoyment of a very fun piece of multimedia from the folks at the Grey Lady. As you might imagine, Greenwich Village (see above) is well represented.
We’d like to take this concept one step further and invite you along for a Greenwich Village Literary Walk on October 24. Not only a great excuse to walk around the beautiful streets of the Village, but you’ll get to see up close and personal where many literary luminaries lived and worked, including James Fenimore Cooper, Louisa May Alcott, Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, Washington Irving, Edna St. Vincent Millay and others. Tickets can be purchased here. Browse all upcoming City Walks here.
DoubleX held their comedy night, The Smoking Bra, last week at 92YTribeca with comedians Morgan Murphy, Allison Silverman, Megan Kellie and Jenny Hagel, along with the band Peacock’s Penny Arcade. If you weren’t there, DoubleX taunted: “I feel sorry for you, because it was awesome.” They’ve recapped the evening with a few videos which are laugh out loud funny. They are also very Not Safe For Work.
Some events coming up at 92YTribeca: Meet the Lady: Hagsploitation! (Sep 30); Mother-Daughter Dynamics: Am I Creating a Monster? (Oct 12) and Kristin Hersch (Nov 12).

Stephin Merritt Presents: Gatherings at Country Houses
“It seems strange to me that video stores don’t have a section for Gatherings at Country Houses, because to me this is one of the best film genres, defined by its setting like the western, or backstage musical, or space opera. Most of my dreams take place in such environments, which probably explains which movies I’ve picked.”—Stephin Merritt
Want to spend the weekend watching films with Stephin Merritt? 92YTribeca is proud to present the Gatherings at Country Houses film series, Oct 22-24, curated by The Magnetic Fields’ singer-songwriter on the eve of the release of the new documentary Strange Powers.
