Yesterday’s High School Guitar Day at the 92nd Street Y was a rocking success. An all day affair from 11:30am until 6pm, the event brought together ”sound makers” students from the greater New York area to participate in performances and workshops. The opening performance featured a special ‘only in New York’ moment, when eclectic rock musician Mark Stewart used Lou Reed’s amps for his songs. Mr. Reed generously loaned the Y’s School of Music the use of four electric guitars and amps this year. This was our first opportunity to really bring them out in public and show them off, which Mark did when he played them loudly and proudly.
We took video of the day, from the final Jazz Ensemble concert to a spontaneous acoustic version of La Bamba performed by students. We will be featuring some of that footage online soon. In the meantime, you can view more photos from the day below, or at the 92nd Street Y Facebook page. For more information about the 92nd Street Y Guitar Institute, you can visit their page online. If you have any budding sound makers in your home, whether quiet singer songwriters or an aspiring Jimi Hendrix, we offer group and private instruction for children, teens, and adults.
