Adrienne Rich, “one of the authentic, unpredictable, urgent, essential voices of our time first,” first appeared at the Unterberg Poetry Center in 1958.

After being awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1997, she refused to accept it. The New York Times reported at the time:

She said she was disturbed by the widening gap between those who have wealth and power and those who do not. Art, she continued, ‘’means nothing if it simply decorates the dinner-table of power which holds it hostage.”

She is returning to 92Y on Sep 21. Yesterday, Feministing.com offered their readers two tickets to the event and they were gone eight minutes later.
