Hailed by Living Blues as “a serious talent”, New York guitarist, singer and songwriter Chris Bergson plays at 92YTribeca tomorrow evening, along with Tony Leone and Mulebone. Chris is not only a killer guitarist, he also teaches guitar here, uptown at 92nd Street Y.
Bergson was gracious enough to answer our Culture Klatsch Q&A that pries deep into our subjects, looking at their culture and media diets. Spolier alert: he prefers reading physical copies of books.
Where do you go for news when you start your day?
The New York Times online.
What are your favorite websites?
LevonHelm.com, Jambands.com, MOJO Magazine’s website (MOJO4music.com) and NYTimes.com
How much do you use Twitter and Facebook (or other social networking services)?
I use both a fair amount although like many people, I’m not a big fan of Facebook’s new layout with the ticker in the upper right hand corner of the screen. Sometimes you miss stuff when you don’t go on there. It’s a funny sign of the times that I learned of both the birth of my best friend’s daughter this year and the breakup of a couple I’m friends with on Facebook. Sometimes I wonder if there’s going to be a privacy backlash down the road!
What book are you currently reading (or the last one you read)? Print or digital?
I’m currently reading The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon. I recently enjoyed Sid Griffin’s Million Dollar Bash about Bob Dylan and The Band’s Basement Tapes. I prefer reading physical copies of books.
What magazines do you subscribe to?
The New Yorker and Blues Revue. I used to subscribe to MOJO as that’s probably my favorite music magazine.
What are your current (or all time) favorite television shows?
I’m really enjoying watching the first season of “Treme” on Netflix. Very powerful and well done. I love the fact that the celebrity cameos in the last episode I watched were Steve Earle, McCoy Tyner and Ron Carter – my kind of celebrities! Current favorite shows are “Body of Proof,” “House” and “The Office.” Even though I’m not a big football fan, I really loved watching all three seasons of “Friday Night Lights” on Netflix recently – some really great performances.
What’s the last movie you saw?
Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris
What’s the last performance (dance/opera/theater) you attended?
La Bête on Broadway. Mark Rylance’s performance was incredible.
What’s the last music purchase you made?
Gillian Welch’s The Harrow & The Harvest. An amazing album.
What radio shows or podcasts do you listen to?
I listen to WDST Radio Woodstock and NPR online sometimes. I also recently upgraded to the commercial free version of Pandora internet radio which I love!
What’s your favorite piece of art on display in your home?
It’s actually one of my three year old daughter’s paintings. It reminds me of Sam Francis.
Where do you go / what do you do to “disconnect”?
I like to go for long runs in Central Park. And sometimes at night by watching shows on Hulu or Netflix.
