92Y Culture Klatsch Q&A With Fern Mallis

New York Fashion Week, in its current form, came about by “an accident,” founder Fern Mallis told Mediabistro in 2008. After successfully putting Mercedes Benz-Fashion Week on the map as Vice President of IMG Fashion, Fern Mallis stepped away from that role and now runs her own consultancy company Fern Mallis LLC.

On October 17, she’ll talk with Calvin Klein at 92nd Street Y to discuss the inner workings of one of New York’s most glamorous industries.

Today, she’s the subject of the 92Y Culture Klatsch Q&A. That’s how we learned her last music purchase was Sade’s latest album, and at work, it’s all WQXR.

Where do you go for news when you start your day?
I start with “The Today Show” in the morning, and often flip to “CNN Morning.” Then I pick up my papers in my lobby: The New York Times, WWD, New York Daily News, The New York Post, The New York Observer.

What are your favorite websites?
Flipboard, The Daily Beast, Mediabistro, Stylelist, The New York Times Style, etc.

How much do you use Twitter and Facebook (or other social networking services)?
I’m still trying to get the hang of Twitter, it’s a whole new language, but I’m trying to use it more often. I use Facebook-intermittently. I post pictures every so often, and like reading the news feed - it has a little more info than Twitter, but I get too many Facebook requests and don’t know who all these people are.

What book are you currently reading (or the last one you read)? Print or digital?
I am starting to read The Hare with Amber Eyes by Edmund de Wall.  I’m also reading The Beautiful Fall: Lagerfeld, Saint Laurent, and Glorious Excess in 1970s Paris by Alicia Duke. Both of those books are in print.  On my Kindle I’m reading Gael Green’s Insatiable: Tales from a Life of Delicious Excess.

What magazines do you subscribe to?
Elle Décor, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Vogue, People, Marie Claire

What are your current (or all time) favorite television shows?
“Brothers & Sisters,” “The Good Wife,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “American Idol,” “60 minutes,” “Mad Men,” “The Big C,” and “The Rachel Zoe Project.” One of my all time favorites was “The West Wing.”

What’s the last movie you saw?
Moneyball with Brad Pitt, and Blackthorn with Sam Shepard.

What’s the last performance (dance/opera/theater) you attended?
“The Woman Standing on the Moon” by James Haigney, and “Master Class” with Tyne Daly by Terrence McNally

What’s the last music purchase you made?
Tony Bennett’s new CD, and Sade’s latest album.

What radio shows or podcasts do you listen to?
SIRIUS XM - The Blend, Jazz, and sometimes the 40’s and other decades. WQXR is my work soundtrack

What’s your favorite piece of art on display in your home?
A large fiberglass wall sculpture of an apple by Don Moulton, his very “Big Apple”, an amazing portrait of me done by Vincent Fantauzzo, and two abstract paintings by my sister Joanne Metcalf.

Where do you go / what do you do to “disconnect”
I go to my house on a beautiful lake in Southampton…and do as little as humanly possible.  I do like to cook and garden both at the house and my apartment in town.

Hear more from Fern when she sits down with Calvin Klein at 92Y
On October 17.
