92Y Video: Christopher Hitchens in Conversation with Salman Rushdie
Christopher Hitchens sat down with Salman Rushdie at the 92nd Street Y this week for a lively conversation about his life and new book, Hitch 22. Both men were introduced by Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter, who recounted a humorous story about an assignment the magazine once sent Hitchens on, who is a contributing editor there. The assignment, about discovering the limits of self-improvement, required Hitchens to, as Carter tells it, get a waxing procedure done: “the back, the sack, and the crack.”
Watch the video above to hear the whole story, as well as Hitchens discussing his parents’ life together and the subsequent suicide of his mother. At the end of the video Hitchens took a number of questions from the audience, two of which you submitted here on the blog in advance of his appearance. One asked his opinion of the new immigration law in Arizona, and another wanted to know who would he most like to have coffee with? Thanks to all who submitted!
Hitchens will be at 92Y again on October 5 when he joins Tariq Ramadan for a debate on Islam.
