92Y Video: Gary Shteyngart reads from Nikolai Gogol’s Dead Souls
Gary Shteyngart reading from Nikolai Gogol Gogol’s Dead Souls, March 30, at 92Y
On March 30 of this year, as part of the 92Y Poetry Center’s Main Reading Series, writers Ken Kalfus, Gary Saul Morson, Gary Shteyngart (who we interviewed here before) and others paid tribute and celebrated Nikolai Gogol in honor of his 200th birthday. In the video above, Gary reads from Gogol’s Dead Souls at the event.
Continuing in that tradition on November 16, the Poetry Center presents: A Celebration of Vladimir Nabokov with Martin Amis, Brian Boyd, Chip Kidd and others. A very notable event, for they will be reading from The Original of Laura. When Vladimir Nabokov died in 1977, he left instructions that the 138 handwritten index cards that composed the rough draft of this novel-in-progress were to be burned. Nabokov’s son Dmitri—the only surviving heir, held onto the notes and has decided to publish Laura, what the BBC’s Newsnight program said was: “...likely to be the literary event of 2009.”
