92YQ: Gary Panter

Gary PanterFacts about Gary Panter, the father of punk comics, you should know:

    · Widely-regarded as the most influential graphic artist of his generation, which was acknowledged by the Chrysler Design award he received in 2000.
    · Contributed a crèche inside the Philippe Starck-designed Paramount Hotel in New York.
    · Won three Emmy Awards as head set designer for Pee Wee’s Playhouse.
    · Created Jimbo, a post-nuclear punk-rock cartoon character whose adventures were first chronicled as a comic strip in the ‘70s LA hardcore-punk paper Slash.
    · Produced album sleeves for Frank Zappa and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
    · Went to college with Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons. (The Simpsons could be seen as mutant escapees from Panter’s early work.)
    · Will be appearing with Matt Groening tomorrow, October 10, at the 92nd Street Y for a Comic Conversation.

But first, his thoughts on 20 years of Brooklyn living.

How many years, apartments and what neighborhoods have you lived in NYC?
20 years in Brooklyn: Gowanus, Carroll Gardens, Park Slope, Ditmas Park
Counting studios: Dumbo, Carroll Gardens, Williamsburg, Bushwick, Ditmas Park

What’s your best (or worst) NYC taxi story?
In a wreck in the rain. Got out with a borrowed red whorehouse umbrella.
Slid through red light in a snow storm.
Car service drunk drove me to La Guardia and was AT NO TIME in only one lane.
Car service with fabric headliner hanging down on me like a collapsed pup tent, driver obviously snorting coke all the way to Kennedy.

What era, day or event in New York’s history would you like to re-live?
9-10-2001

What’s your New York motto?
Brooklyn--where the weak are killed and eaten.

Describe that low, low moment when you thought you just might have to leave NYC for good.
9-12-2001

Who do you consider to be the greatest New Yorker of all-time?
Glenn O’Brien

What was your best dining experience in NYC?
Hot dog at Schnack.

With a nod to Milton Glaser, how much do you really love New York?
I love it in spite of those posters.

Of all the movies made about or highly associated with New York, what role would you have liked to be cast in?
Leo DiCaprio in Gangs of New York

What happened the last time you went to L.A.?
Last month we were in LA for my painting show at Billy Shire Fine Art at Washington and Fairfax and we had a blast. Had great Mexican food in Farmer’s Market with Matt Groening. And Mexican food in East LA with Bob Zoell and his son Gus.

If you could change one thing about New York, what would it be?
Fix the World Trade Center.

The End of The World is finally happening. What are you going to do with your last 24 hours in NYC?
Drink Chocolate Yoohoo and eat candied nuts. Pick up money people are throwing away.
