Karamoko Keita cover art, via Awesome Tapes from Africa
Thanks to 92YTribeca sound engineer Wayne Lopes and our friends at WNYC who attended a DJ set at 92YTribeca at Brian Shimkovitz, (of the Awesome Tapes from Africa music blog) there is an hour long stream available from the performance. WNYC writes: It’s not often that a blogger’s DJ set gets us out on a Friday night, but Brian Shimkovitz is not your average mp3 pirate. His site’s title pretty much says it all - Awesome Tapes from Africa takes obscure cassettes from Senegal, Ethiopia, Mali, Morocco, Eritrea, Ghana and other African countries and digitizes them into downloadable form. In an interview with WNYC’s Alt.Cult blog, Brian explained that while living in Ghana for a year, he amassed a large number of cassettes from the region. After moving to New York City, he wanted to share the music he had, and Awesome Tapes from Africa was born.
92Y is a big fan of music blogs, and appreciate the effort they put forth in sharing the music that moves them. For those not familiar with the incredible variety of music blogs, the blog list maintained by the Hype Machine, an aggregator of music blogs, is a great place to start. Have fun digging through those digital crates.
