For everyone with an Ian Fleming or Graham Greene buzz, here’s the story of Efraim Halevy.
Born an Englishman, Halevy was raised in the Jewish stronghold of North London and at one time attended the same school as left-wing playwright Harold Pinter. A Zionist, Halevy chose to emigrate in 1948 to fight in the Israeli war of independence. In the years after Israel’s creation, Halevy worked his way up the ladder of the Mossad to become the chief of Israeli intelligence. As the Telegraph noted, his nickname was the ”Spymaster of NW6.” While helming the Mossad, Halevy was responsible for the heavily criticized practice of targeted assasinations but also helped negotiate the historic peace treaty with Jordan. He spoke with The Economist about the nature of spycraft back in 2004 and he’ll be speaking at Makor about The Real Intelligence: Inside the Mossad on Tuesday, April 25.
