G.I. Joe Stop Motion Film Festival on Tour at 92YTribeca
Best Stop-Motion Film using 3 3/4” Action Figures - 2008: Cobra Secret Weapon - USA (part 1)
The G.I. Joe Stop Motion Film Festival is the nation’s first festival dedicated to screening works by stop-motion artists who use GI Joe or similar figures (12”, 8” -sigma 6- and 3 ¾ sizes) as main characters or actors. Film in Focus said:
There are a lot of film festivals over the course of the year – international film festivals, documentary film festivals, gay film festivals, short film festivals, animation film festivals, ethnic film festivals, genre film festivals, and the list goes on. Suffice it to say, a lot of fests jockey for attention so it’s always heartening when certain events clearly stand out from the pack. One that does so with style and aplomb is the GI Joe Stop-Motion Film Festival
The Festival will be held in September in Denver, Colorado, where the winners for 2009 will be chosen. In the meantime though, the Festival is traveling across the country showcasing the winners of 2008.
On Jul 25 92YTribeca will play host to the touring Festival and their frequently bizarre and unfailingly interesting films. You’ll see re-creations of famous movies, including a variety of takes on an iconic Indiana Jones scene and a loving homage to John Carpenter’s The Thing. One film tackles the absurdity of the War on Drugs, another sets up a Cobra vs. G.I. Joe dance-off and one of the strangest of all is a fractured fairy tale of obsession and suicide.
