For the second consecutive week, PBS NewsHour’s Art Beat blog selected the work of a ”Discovery"/Boston Review Poetry Contest winner for its Weekly Poem feature. Last week, the spotlight was on Jynne Dilling Martin; this week it’s Jeffrey Schultz’s turn. Schultz (pictured) was one of four winners of our poetry contest, which since 1951 has recognized the achievements of poets who have not yet published a first book. A selection of Schultz’s poem, ‘J. Begins by Saying The World’s Not as It Should Be’ follows:
And then, embarrassed at the conversation’s sudden death,
all eyes at once on him, and daunted, honestly, at the prospect
Of going on, of cataloging, in detail, the slow distension
each child’s belly must endure, and each piece of flesh
Cauterized without knowing it would be, without any time
to prepare before the glowing hot shrapnel enters it And join us tomorrow, May 21, for the poetry of Richard Wilbur, who will be here for an afternoon interview and evening reading.
