AMG: One of the most fascinating composers you cover on Preludes is Alexei Stanchinsky, an innovator of modern music in Russia who died at the age of only 26, even before Scriabin passed away.
JL: What incredible music Stanchinsky wrote! Imagine what else he could have written had he lived longer. In Stanchinsky’s case, it took me a very long time just to find all the scores. The Library of Congress didn’t have much, and I had friends in Russia surreptitiously copying out scores in libraries, which they weren’t supposed to be doing! However, someone else found the volume of his complete piano music in a second-hand store in Russia and sent it to me, an edition I thought I’d never see in my lifetime. Likewise, some of Feinberg’s music is still nowhere to be found, although I’ve heard that his widow is still alive, so perhaps there’s hope.
