When Manhattan School of Music student Nellie McKay‘s shows started to get noticed in New York City, Time Out New York noticed too, and did their first piece on the upcoming artist in 2003. She told the magazine: “My grandfather was a murderer,” she says. “He was a frustrated performer, basically, and ended up in San Quentin. His father was a bullfighter—and here I am an animal rights activist! But my Mom is primo. I’m a little too close to her; it borders on the freaky. She’s an actor. She recently played Donald Trump’s pottery teacher in a commercial.
We won’t fact check all of this, but it’s well known that Nellie likes to tell stories that may or may not be true. In fact, in an interview with Time Out four years later, she stated: “You should always lie during interviews.” Nellie holds passionate opinions and is not afraid to share them.
As for her stories, we don’t care if she is telling the truth or not, her music is a pleasure to listen to. In an interview with Pop Matters last week, they wrote: She has a distinctive style that combines pop, rap, jazz, and show tunes with an acerbic wit and provocative intelligence. Her singing voice an be endearing one moment and cutting the next as her mind freely associates across the musical and intellectual spectrum.
