Newspapers will disappear, blog are taking over, the media is dying! Everyone is wringing their hands over the state of journalism today, but what about arts and culture reporting? Is it all moving online? Let’s see… ANIMAL, Arts Beat, ArtsJournal and Art Fag City are just a narrow selection of websites covering the arts and culture beat.
It’s an interesting selection. ANIMAL used to be a beloved print magazine, and now publishes online only, though it’s always possible it might once again go to print. Arts Beat is a New York Times blog which supplements the extensive arts and culture coverage they provide in the newspaper. ArtsJournal and Art Fag City both started online and are respected and well read websites. ArtsJournal by their own definition provides “Daily arts news from more than 100 newspapers, magazines and e-publications.” Art Fag City is the only online publication that might be accurately described as an individual, stand alone blog (Paddy Johnson, we salute you) that was never a print pub, nor a supplement to one.
So 92YTribeca asked, has the rise of online periodicals and cultural blog eroded arts reporting? You know what? The heck if we know! That’s why 92YTribeca invited Village Voice Publisher Michael Cohen, Voice editor-in-chief Tony Ortega and Jake Dobkin, publisher of Gothamist, to discuss the current state of arts and cultural journalism at a talk: Print vs. Blog: The Many Faces of Cultural Journalism. Will alternative print newspapers survive the economic downturn? What will arts aficionados read in the years to come? This is sure to be an informative discussion led by intelligent people who live and breathe these issues.
