Author Rich Cohen's grandfather, Ben Eisenstadt, invented the artificial sweetener Sweet'N Low after his original revolutionary idea for sugar packets was stolen by the big sugar companies. He and his family made a fortune, which Cohen has been disinherited from. Sweet and Low is Cohen's fascinating and funny account of his Brooklyn family history. His Noontime Lecture on the book at the Makor/Steinhardt Center last September was well-attended, and we're happy to be able to offer this podcast from it.
Cohen will be back at the Makor/Steinhardt Center next Monday to discuss his other Brooklyn history book, Tough Jews: Fathers, Sons, and Gangster Dreams.
