Stay the Night for Tikkun Leil Shavuot: All fun, no werewolves!
Ready to pull an all-nighter with no exam the next day? Join us Tuesday, May 22 for our annual Tikkun Leil Shavuot “Stay the Night” celebration for a free evening of music, film and traditional (and not-so-traditional) study focusing on social justice, community service and making the world a better place. The night begins around 9:30pm with introductory remarks by renowned author-activists Alice Walker and Gloria Steinem who are making a special appearance after their event at the Y earlier in the evening. All through the night there will be workshops, film screenings, discussion sessions, food, dancing and much more culminating in a rooftop ceremony at 4am. Here are a few of the sample activities: Sudanese Refugees Seeking Asylum in Israel: The Practical Risks and the Humanitarian Responsibility in Providing a Safe Haven
Does the Jewish State have a moral responsibility to provide a haven to victims of genocide? A panel of experts discuss Israel’s role in providing asylum to Sudanese refugees crossing the border from Egypt. What are the facts? What are the legal issues? How is the international community responding to Israel’s stance? What are the risks to Israel in providing such asylum?
“Kosher Sex”
What does Kosher have to do with it? An interactive (clothed!) session discovering what the rabbis say about sex that makes you feel good inside, out, and all over! Led by Rose Kowel, an HUC Rabbinical student from sweet home Alabama who loves Jew camp, reality TV, Brooklyn, her cat Mamash and kosher sex.
Cook N’ Give: Cooking with Renowned Chef Steve Herman
In this hands on workshop in the spirit of Shavuot learn how to make the best blintzes in the city with homemade applesauce and the works. After sampling a few for you, pack up the rest for an East Side soup kitchen.
