It’s true. As Lois Weiss noted in The Post this morning, the Y has put the Steinhardt Building at 35 West 67th Street, site of countless memorable classes and events over the years, up for sale. Both of the Y programs that have called the Steinhardt Building home—Makor and Daytime @—will move to the Y’s headquarters at 92nd and Lex. When? Three to five years. How? We’re going to be working with architects and engineers to figure that out, and big things are in the works. In the meantime, Makor and Daytime @ will move to a temporary location TBD.
More important, why? It’s all part of the long-term planning that the Y’s been doing. Like every big organization, every 10 years or so we sit down and scrutinize everything we do and everything we want to accomplish over the next decade. One of the things we realized while thinking about what a “21st-century 92nd Street Y” should look like was that we want to increase our programs for New Yorkers in their 20s and 30s and for Baby Boomers. And that realization led to another: How much more could we accomplish if all the programs for these folks—those now on the East Side and those on the West Side—could join forces under one roof, where they could tap into each other’s energy and creativity?
A lot, we think. We’ll keep you posted on the latest developments right here.
