The Quotable Edith Wharton

image
Novelist Edith Wharton in 1905, New York Times Slideshow

“There are lots of ways of being miserable, but there’s only one way of being comfortable, and that is to stop running round after happiness. If you make up your mind not to be happy there’s no reason why you shouldn’t have a fairly good time.”

“A New York divorce is in itself a diploma of virtue.”

“The American landscape has no foreground and the American mind no background.”

“There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.”

On April 13, Hermione Lee, the Goldsmiths’ Professor of English at Oxford College, will host a Biographers & Brunch talk at the Y to talk about her book Edith Wharton which is being released in paperback tomorrow and was previously reviewed by John Updike: “Her close and ingenious explications reveal formal patterns of design and persuasive, sometimes subtle connections with Wharton’s experiences.”
